Lessons Learnt

I started coaching in 2003. I have coached a lot of people since then. Prepared athletes for 4 different Olympic Games and multiple world championships. I have worked with international athletes in athletics, kayak, triathlon, rowing, swimming, MMA and more. I have also worked extensively in international team sports with the England men’s and women’s football teams and in netball with the New Zealand Silver Ferns.

In recent years I have also been working with non-athletes. Taking everything I have learnt from elite sport and making this support available to anyone who wants to train. This includes Hollywood actors, driven professionals, complete beginners, people who haven’t trained in years and all abilities / fitness levels. Many couldn’t do a push up when they started. Others are extremely capable and can out train some of the athletes I work with.

I detail all this because through all these experiences I really have learnt so so much; the daily trainings, the training camps, the competitions, the programmes, the final preps before competition, the beginners, the rehab, the relationships… and more. I have tried so many different types of sessions, exercises, equipment, training week structures, sets and reps, year plans, coaching cues, ways to peak for competition, meal plans, the list goes on… Whether Iv always got it completely right or not… Always learning.

And the place I have learnt the most… I have trained seriously and competed in athletics myself as a 400m runner for almost 3 decades. I know what hard training feels like, how to work around injuries, what is involved in improving technique, how to transfer physical capabilities to the sport, how to fuel for performance, how it feels to cycle training phases towards a goal and what real training feels like and what is a fad. I have certainly learnt more from training and competing than anywhere else.

So…. lessons learnt… well above all I hope to keep learning and I hope to be part of experiences that challenge what I know. I also hope I can help you with your training whoever you are.
